Why a RAR file is awkward

RAR is a proprietary archive format. Creating RAR files officially requires WinRAR, which is paid software, and — more importantly for most people — opening them is not built into Windows or macOS. So when someone sends you a .rar, double-clicking it often does nothing, or your computer asks what app to use.

ZIP is the opposite. It is an open format that Windows, macOS, and pretty much every phone can open natively, with no extra software. Converting RAR to ZIP turns an archive your system does not understand into one it opens with a double-click.

The situation you are probably in

Almost everyone who needs this tool is in the same spot: a file arrived as a RAR, WinRAR is not installed, and you just want to get at the contents — or hand them on to someone else who also does not have WinRAR. Rather than installing extra software for a one-off archive, you convert it to a ZIP your operating system already handles.

This is also useful when you need to re-share files. Sending a ZIP instead of a RAR means the person on the other end will not hit the same wall you did.

What is supported, and what is not

This converter handles standard RAR4 and RAR5 archives — the two versions you will encounter in the wild. A couple of things are out of scope, and it is better to know upfront:

• Password-protected (encrypted) archives cannot be converted, because the contents are locked until decrypted.
• Multi-part archives (split into .part1.rar, .part2.rar, and so on) are not supported as a set.

For an ordinary single RAR file, you are fine.

It repackages, it does not re-compress

A fair question: does converting RAR to ZIP squeeze your files twice and hurt quality? No. The tool extracts the original files out of the RAR exactly as they were, then packages those same files into a standard ZIP. Your documents, photos, and folders come through unchanged — including nested folder structure and non-English filenames. The only thing that changes is the wrapper around them.
